The Shahsavan are the most famous confederation of tribal groups in north-west Iran with the majorityof Turkic origin and the rest being Kurdish, Tadjics or Georgians. They are some of the most expert weavers of Sumak technique (weft wrapped brocaded kilims) producıng a fascinating range of fine decorative sumaks as well as textiles needed in their daily nomadic life. These include storage sacks, kilims (both decorative and functional), bedding bags, camel and donkey bags, babies' cradles, and most famously their ceremonial horse blankets. Persian, Caucasian and Shaman influences are evident in the design of Shahsavan weavings with, stylized birds, flowers, animal and human figures. Colours vary from old weavings where rich reds and orange predominate, to more modern weaving which use a softer more pastel palette.
Please note: All our store items are handmade. Our vintage pieces are all preloved and due to the age and/or handmade nature of these items, minor signs of patination, fading, wear, or slightly asymmetrical lines may be present. These are not considered flaws, they are part of their unique nature and why we love using them in our homes as they add both character and charm.
