The central Mediterranean city of Antalya was founded in the Hellenistic period, around 150 BCE, by Attalos II, king of Pergamon, though these days it is most famous for its ’beautiful beaches and resorts..Surrounded by the vast Toros mountains its weaving history was largely that of the ‘Yoruks ‘or nomads who predominately wove kilims and textured ‘cicim kilims for their every day use in tents, or as bags for transport as well as for a young womens’ marriage dowry.
Their compositions are very distinctive with either a large central medallion or repeating serrated medallions that are generally bold and well defined.and are often thought to represent abundance and prosperity.Wool is usually hand spun from the nomads sheep though occasionally cotton is used to highlight aspects of designs Colours are in general, vibrant with a sunrise palette that includes pinks reds yellows and orange All sizes from small to large are common, though they are always woven on upright vertical looms .Antalya ‘Barak’ kilims are always slitwoven in technique, and though generally the kilims are of a medium weave, in some older vintage kilims the weaving is very fine, using tightly spun, shiny wool.
Please note :All our store items are handmade. Our vintage pieces are all preloved and due to the age and/or handmade nature of these items, minor signs of patination, fading, wear, or slightly unsymmetrical lines may be present. These are not considered flaws, they are part of their unique nature and why we love using them in our homes as they add both character and charm.
