This beautiful wool on cotton carpet is of a medium knot density with the soft blues and mint greens making it very unusual and unique and is signed as coming from Elaziğ.
Although there has been considerable research on Indian Jail carpets from the 1800's onwards there is little documentation of the two most famous Prison projects in Turkey - those from Sivas in central Anatolia and Elaziğ jail in Eastern Anatolia
Sivas already had a history as an important weaving centre in the 19thC where Turkish and Armenian weavers produced adaptations of persian and ottoman designs in various workshops and cottage industry centred in surrounding villages. and rug weaving was a prime sorce of income
.From the early 1940's onwards unique carpet weaving projects were set up in the main men'Ss prison primarily as a way to fund the actual prison itself as well as to provide a small income to the prisoners. The Sivas project was so successful andf the carpets of such high quality that the Elaziğ jail followed suit, with inmates weaving fine wool on cotton carpets with traditional Ottoman designs and a distinctive palette that made them easily recognisable.
These projects ceased by the late 1970's but due to the unique nature of these projects and the fact that it was men weaving these rugs ( In Turkey it is only women who traditiobally weave rugs ) are always very collectable on todays' markets. Many though not all are signed and numbered .
