Turkish Elazig Prison Carpet - very rare

Size:1.88 x 1.32 6.2 ft x 4.3 ft )

Materials Wool knowtting on cotton warps

Age : 50 yrs .

Perfect condition

This beautiful wool on cotton carpet is of a good level of knot density with the slightly pinky/mauve tone and soft turquoise on a black ground field making it very unusual and unique.TThe colors and balance of design and quality all make it very special. Its also from Elaziğ Prison in eastern Turkey which as far as I know not many people or dealers were aware that they even wove carpets and I have only personally had  2 others in stock in 30 years

. Despite the clarity and dynamic of the quality colours it sits surprisingly harmoniously on the floor without jarring notes. This rug has a premium wool pile and is symmetrically hand knotted using an intricate Hereke' Yildiz' Palace design. It comes in superb condition for a collector or enthusiast and is a one of a kind rug to cherish. The most well known of the open prison projects were those from Sivas and Isparta where from the early 1940's onwards unique carpet weaving projects were set up in the main mens prison primarily as a way to fund the actual prison itself as well as to provide a small income to the prisoners. These projects ceased by the late 1970's but due to the unique nature of the project and the fact that it was men weaving these rugs ( In Turkey it is only women who weave rugs ) are always very collectable on todays' markets.

What People Say -

Fabulous Collection

One of the most fascinating, entertaining and educational carpet experiences I've ever had.Ruth has a fabulous collection of rugs and kilims and it's clear that she loves them all. She knows the story behind each one and enthusiastically shares the background about the weaver and the meaning of the work.

Ruth is very welcoming and there was never any pressure to buy.

I did take home a couple of lovely pieces and I will definitely return.  I highly recommend her shop !
