This beautiful wool on cotton carpet is of a medium knot density with the rose tone and soft greens making it very unusual and unique.Sivas was an important weaving centre in the 19thC where Turkish and Armenian weavers produced adaptations of persian and ottoman designs in various workshops and cottage industry centred in surrounding villages. The central Anatolian/Turkish region of Sivas, which is mainly agricultural, is largely made up of both Turkish and Kurdish people and rug weaving was a prime sorce of income. From the early 1940's onwards unique carpet weaving projects were set up in the main mens prison primarily as a way to fund the actual prison itself as well as to provide a small income to the prisoners.
These projects ceased by the late 1970's but due to the unique nature of the project and the fact that it was men weaving these rugs ( In Turkey it is only women who weave rugs ) are always very collectable on todays' markets.
