The Afshar originate from a tribe of Oghuz Turks who migrated from the plains of Oibchaq in Turkestan. They settled near the Zagros Mountains and by the end of the 15th century they had dispersed across Persia. The Afshar are one of the main Persian tribes and are amongst the most scattered of Turkic peoples. The main areas they inhabit these days are Khuzestan, Khorassan, Kerman, Sirjan, Baft and Azerbaijan. Due to the vast areas that the Afshar inhabit they have assimilated various weaving techniques and a variety of designs from neighbouring tribes and differing environments.Consequently, the accuracy of the Afshar label is sometimes debated. Woollen warps and wefts predominated until cotton was adopted early in the 20th century. The foundation and pile wools tend to be soft and few tribes reveal such imaginative diversity of pattern and designs These range from traditional repeating medallions with Turkoman overtones to Kerman inspired vase patterns. Colours used are deep reds, blue, green and white. Afshar weaving has a excellent reputation and older, more individual pieces are highly sought after on todays markets
