Turkoman were nomads or semi nomads and legend says that Oghuz Khan was the original father of the Turkoman peopleThey continued to migrate and now large tribal groups of Turkomans live in Turkmenistan,Uzbekistan, Iran and Afghanistan. The history, genealogy, beliefs and way of life of the Turkoman steppe peoples are all of great importance to their woven art.Turkoman weavings, with a distinctive red-brown palette, repeating rows of geometric 'gul'ornamentation, extremely fine major and minor borders, high knot count and strong glossy wool represent a highly complex and historically continuous culture.
Following the wars in Afghanistanit was important to preserve the famous rug weaving culture so carpet making projects were established, which combine the traditional skills of a diverse range of individuals and tribes to recreate their fine quality carpets.Bilcik, Kunduz and Halmehmedi are the generic names given to this particular new group of carpets, which with their lustrous wools, deep rich colours and intricate designs have re established Turkoman weavings, at best, as some of the finest weavings found on todays market.
